FGASA LOWVELD NORTH

F.G.A.S.A Regional Meeting Lowveld North - 29th June 2007 at Jos Mac’s pub.  The Lowveld North region of FGASA held a meeting on 29th June at Jos Mac’s pub. Sadly only 3 people turned up for the meeting. This highlights the fact that there needs to be a better method of communication between the members on the ground and the committee that has now been elected.

The minutes from the meeting can be obtained on request from Ian should anyone need a copy. It was decided to try and set up sections within the region and make committee members responsible for those sections. This will hopefully improve communication channels and help us to disseminate important information when needed. Each committee member has been tasked with trying to contact all the FGASA members in their respective sections and build up a database. Should you want to contact your representative on any issue please do so using the contact numbers below or if you are from an area not covered please contact Ian directly.

KNP STRIKE UPDATE

Interdict granted against unruly strikers
THE Labour Court has granted an interdict on behalf of SANParks to Hospersa and its members. SANParks says it was granted in light of acts of misconduct and intimidation of staff and visitors by striking staff at its parks, particularly the Kruger National Park. David Mabunda, ce of SANParks, says: “In practical terms this means that striking Hospersa members will cease their unlawful conduct in the park including the blowing of any noisy instruments, trying to prevent staff and guests from entering the park as well as vandalising SANParks property.”

SANParks reports that despite what the public has been led to believe the strike has not been effective in disrupting services. Most employees are at work. Current figures show that in Kruger NP 437 out of 1,905 (only permanent staff members reflected); Table Mountain NP 11 out of 129; Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park 24 out of 87; Mountain Zebra NP 6 out of 24 and West Coast 6 out of 30 staff members were on strike today.

“We would like to reassure our guests that they will be able to receive the expected standard of service in the park despite the strike. If a water pipe bursts in Mata Mata camp during the strike it would be ridiculous to tie this in anyway to the strike action.” “The reality is that the striking members of HOSPERSA are too few to effect any severe blow to the systems and services of SANParks,” said Dr Mabunda.

KNP OFFICE GUTTED BY FIRE

A fire has gutted one of the administrative offices at the Kruger National Park, SABC news reported on Saturday. The park's administrative offices at the Pretoriusskop camp were burnt down.

Kruger National Park spokesperson William Mabasa said that the incident may be linked to the ongoing strike between management and the Health and Other Services Personnel Trade Union of SA. Mabasa said business has not been affected. Police were investigating the cause of the fire.

NEW INFO CENTRE FOR PRETORIUSKOP

A NEW information centre has been established by the Lowveld Honorary Rangers, at Pretoriuskop Camp in the Kruger National Park (KNP). The centre was an old post office, which had been used as a gun base until the Lowveld Honorary Rangers converted it into a small museum.

It now contains sighting boards as well as historical items including old flags, belt buckles and rifles. The centre is manned by park staff during the week and by the honorary rangers at weekends. The facility is disabled-friendly.

SORRY, WE COULDN'T MAKE IT...

SOUTH Africa’s profile in Japan and South Korea has been raised a few notches as a result of a recent four-city road show, which participants have hailed as their “best ever”. Exhibitors have praised the “superior” organisation of the show, which they say attracted an unprecedented number of trade delegates.

The same could not, however, be said for several South African provincial tourism authorities, who delegates say withdrew from the road show at the 11th hour. This despite having been listed in the road show’s marketing collateral. “People were eager to get news on South Africa because the SA Tourism team actually personally invited senior delegates to attend the road show, and then three of the provinces that were listed did not arrive. Only Cape Town Routes Unlimited attended and did exceptionally well,” says Fairfield Tours md, Ian Kleinhans. Legend Lodges sales and marketing manager, Manuela Pallamar, says the Japanese see this last-minute cancellation as a “loss of face”.

Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency had planned in advance to be part of the delegation, but had to cancel at the “last minute” due to unforeseen circumstances with ceo, Solly Mosidi, said public relations officer, Kholo Khwinana.

Limpopo Tourism and Parks, for its part, also blamed logistical problems for its failure to attend. “There was a death in the family of the person who was supposed to attend, and we were unable to secure a visa in time for the replacement,” said communications officer, Kgatla Ntlehekeng.

LETTERS FROM OUR READERS

HAZYVIEW ELLIES ARE THE BEST!!

A Big Thank You to the Hazyview Elephant Sanctuary and all their friendly staff who showed us around on an educational recently. What a wonderful experience!

The encounter with the two ellies was mind blowing, especially for someone who has a mortal fear for bad tempered Kruger Park car stompers! It was such an eye opener to meet and touch such gentle giants, and the walk with them was an experience one can not easily forget. The reception was warm, the guides extremely friendly and very interesting, and the ellies very keen to nibble on any snacks.

Thank you for sharing such a great experience with us, we certainly loved it and will recommend anyone to go and see the elephant. For a city slicker this is just the cure for thinking the African bush is boring! Well done, we will recommend you!

Andrea and staff from Böhm's Zeederberg Country House.

THANK YOU!
